My Woman’s Body

Who else is frustrated when a man says “I don’t think it works that way” when you talk to them about period or birth control. “I’ll look it up later.” Excuse me, sir, but I live in this complicated mess monthly. I do not need your to look it up for me, as I experience it fully.

Or – How many of you have had embarrassing moments during a period where you’ve been brought nearly to tears? Y’all, I still have to put together makeshift pads sometimes, cause irregular periods are a regular occurrence for me. I have absolutely given away feminine products to friends and strangers in public bathrooms. I have bled through soooo many things, and I definitely have multiple pairs of period panties.

The human body is a crazy thing, especially when it comes to women. I am not an expert, but I do possess a woman’s body that I live in and experience daily, so I think that counts for something.

Is it cool that I can create life inside me and create a whole human being? Absolutely!

Is it extremely annoying having monthly blood-lettings, hormonal imbalances, uncontrollable mood swings, severe cramping and discomfort, being expected to be in charge of the birth control, having to pay for birth control, having a billion and one ways your female reproductive organs can disappoint you, hurt you, fail you and even try to kill you? ALSO ABSOLUTELY!

I just had a conversation with Andrew about ways birthday control affect my body, and he straight up told me “I don’t think that’s how it works. I’ll look it up later.”

He is one of the smartest men I know, but having been on birth control for nearly 10 years makes me slightly more of an expert than him….

I won’t say that all men are ignorant, and there are plenty that know WAY more than me about the female body, reproduction issues and initiatives, and the laws surrounding them.

Until you have lived through the struggle that is being a woman on or around her period, please do not tell me what to do with my body. Utilize your resources to make health care affordable, to provide medical care for women in need, to make feminine product and birth control available as readily and cheaply as possible, without shame or stigma tied to using them.

Thank you for reading my morning rant about femininity and have an awesome day!
