When it comes to modeling, especially amateur modeling (because let’s be real, ya girl is NOT a professional), there are so many different points of worry, uncertainty, and nerves. In this post, I am going to walk you through an average scenario of what I do when prepping for a photoshoot.

First up: Set your goals! Why are you doing this photoshoot? Are you a senior in high school wanting to capture some shots for your senior showcase and announcements? Are you wanting to do a boudoir shoot to create a spicy little gift for someone special? Are you a bride wanting to catch those many happy moments on your most special day? Whatever your reasons, it is important to know what you want to get out of the shoot. I know that I have specifically requested special shoots before, such as asking for headshots for work and my social media accounts. You are the client, and you are setting up this shoot with specific ideas of what you want, even if you don’t really know how to do that. Figure out what ideas you like and really define the outcome you want. The next part: talk to your photographer about those goals! I know I have been lucky to be rather close with most of the photographers I have worked with in the past. But even without a preexisting relationship, it is important to let the person behind the camera know what you are hoping for. If you openly communicate, they have a better chance of providing you with stellar images of you than if you just leave them guessing. If you have ideas for a certain pose or location, tell them! Most of the time, they will be able to help you capture a moment that is very close to what you have in mind. Be flexible and willing to follow their direction and trust in the outcome.

What to Wear: The type of shoot will define what sort of clothing you might need to wear. I always bring a few types of outfits to each photoshoot. This is another area where your photographer can help you if you really don’t know what to wear. My first instinct is to tell you to wear something comfortable. Now, when I say comfy, I don’t mean ratty old sweats and a hoodie. I mean something that you feel comfortable in. Something that you think is flattering on your body, something that makes you feel confident and attractive, something that you would want other people to see you in. Next would be to make sure what you are wearing is appropriate for what kind of shoot you are going for. You probably wouldn’t want to wear lingerie for a professional headshot. You need to fit your outfit to the level of photos you are having taken. Being comfortable goes with makeup as well as clothes. I would not recommend trying a bold new look if you aren’t experienced with makeup and are doing a simple shoot. Stick with your normal make-up range and you will be able to amplify your natural look. However, if you are doing a funky shoot or trying to be a bit more fun, then take a chance on something a bit more wild. I did a shoot with Laura when she last came to visit me on the coast, and we spent one evening with me in a bit more wild look than I am used to. But i have to say that those are some of the most fierce looks I have ever served, and a few of my favorite photos to this day.

Don’t overthink things. Modeling as an amature is not about having the perfect body, smile or look. It is about having a blast and bringing the emotions in your heart out in the form of beautiful snapshots. If it is your first time, it can be a little awkward and uncomfortable. But I promise, if you allow yourself to relax and communicate openly with your photographer, they will make it so much easier for you. I have worked with Laura sooooo many times, and while she is my best friend, she always has a way of asking me to do things outside of my comfort zone and helping me to make her ideas come to life. Trust in the process, and try to follow their lead. Do your best to enjoy the experience. Let your photographer know if they get a shot in particular that you like, or even if there is one you don’t. YOU are the focus, and it is all about what you want. So don’t be afraid to embrace the moment, have fun, and just rock it. The best type of photos are the ones where you see yourself and go “Wow.” I wish everyone to have at least one moment (hopefully many) during a shoot where they see themselves and think “I look amazing in that shot!” We are each beautifully and wonderfully made, and there is not another person out there that is quite the same. So be YOU, and enjoy!
In a society like we have today, it is hard to not compare yourself with the many influencers, models, and celebrities out there in the world that we see posted all over social media and the news. It is important to remember that you DO NOT have replicate what they put out into the world. YOU are unique and adorable in your own way, and you can be your own version of phenomenal.
All my love,
~Kelly
